Emotional Intelligence In The Workplace

When talking about emotional intelligence, we like to use the definition by Daniel Goleman, PhD. Emotional intelligence is the capability of individuals to recognize their own emotions and those of others, discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and adjust emotions to adapt to environments. Although the term first appeared in 1964, it gained popularity in the 1995 best-selling book Emotional Intelligence, written by science journalist Daniel Goleman. Goleman defined EI as the array of skills and characteristics that drive leadership performance.

The Benefits of Emotional Intelligence In The Workplace

Many of us have worked for individuals and companies and have had varied experiences. In our careers, we may have come across leaders who we trust, admire and just downright like. What makes them so likable you might wonder? Chances are, these individuals possess high levels of emotional intelligence. When we’re working in environments where these leaders are present, we enjoy our work much more of the time, we feel safer, we’re able to communicate more openly and we’re far more engaged.

Emotional Intelligence Studies: What Does The Research Say?

To substantiate the work we do, we look at the research. In one very well done study called “Emotional Intelligence: What Does the Research Really Indicate?”,  we wanted to highlight the section where the studies look deeply into emotional intelligence in the workplace. They point to a prior study that found a positive and significant relation between EI and leadership effectiveness in a group of executives. Another study cited suggests that this is not an isolated finding. In the first published meta-analytic study related to EI, Van Rooy and Viswesvaran (2004) examined the power EI has to predict performance outcomes across an array of domains by looking at 69 independent studies. They found a correlation between EI and performance, and the predictive validity of EI held relatively constant across the different performance domains, from workplace to academic. This is excellent research and we continue to comb through high quality research that continues to inform us on what we offer.

How We Implement Emotional Intelligence With Your Team

We recognize that not everyone in your organization is a people manager, yet we believe that each individual can cultivate leadership skills that will help them in their career, and in society. The workplace continues to change and evolve and we recognize the unique opportunities and challenges that organizations and corporations of all sizes encounter. Our emotional intelligence program is based on the model Daniel Goleman, PhD began developing in the late 1990’s. Our program focuses on the four domains of EI (emotional intelligence) which include self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, and relationship management. These four domains have twelve competencies, and when combined with evidence-based mindfulness practices make for remarkable and measurable outcomes. In addition to our Core Mindfulness Offerings, we can also customize a program for your organization. Whether it’s a keynote talk, a series of workshops, or one on one training, we have the team and the capability to make for a meaningful working relationship.

Who Is It For?

The Mind EQ offerings are designed for employees, as well as all levels of management and leadership. Our programs are designed to be highly accessible and engaging. We use slide decks to supplement our presentations and we always make time in every session for Q&A. We take the training sessions we offer very seriously, yet we don’t take ourselves too seriously, and we receive feedback on a regular basis that’s consistent with our aim to make the time spent together enjoyable.
